Accessibility is a major concern for people with disabilities, especially when it comes to public transportation. In recent years, there has been a push towards making public transportation more accessible for people with disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs. So the question arises, are all Chennai public buses wheelchair accessible?
The short answer is no, barely a few Chennai public buses are wheelchair accessible. While the MTC has made efforts to make some of their buses wheelchair accessible, the majority of their fleet is not equipped to accommodate wheelchair users. According to a news report, as of 2021, only 32 of the 4,523 MTC buses in Chennai are wheelchair accessible. This also makes it difficult for them to access employment, education, healthcare, and other essential services.
